Things to do in Western MA in the Fall
Autumn in New England is so picturesque that people will drive hours just to view the beautiful foliage and landscapes.
While many of us have been spoiled by seeing these trees on our way to work every morning, there are still ways that a local can go out and enjoy all that Western MA has to offer in the fall.

1. Apple Picking and Cider Donuts at Atkins Farms
Located on Route 116, Atkins Farms is a big local apple destination. Even once apple picking season has ended, they still have plenty of apple treats and pumpkin picking to enjoy. They also sell a lot of local produce at great prices, and gift baskets for every occasion.
2. Mike’s Maze
From the end of August to early November, Mike’s Maze in Sunderland runs an eight acre corn maze, with a new theme every year. During the month of October, they also have a Mystery Maze on the weekends that involves “flashlights provided, courage required.”
3. Mohawk Trail State Forest
The Mohawk State Trail is probably one of the most popular foliage drives in MA. It is located along route 2 in Charlemont, this is perfect if you are looking to visit the eastern part of Massachusetts but want a scenic drive on the way. The forest is known for its camping sites and affordable cabins that can be rented for a weekend. These cabins include a wood-burning stove that make for a warmer camping trip for the off-season.
4. The Montague Book Mill
The Book Mill in Montague refers to itself as “books you don’t need in a place you can’t find.” While this may be true, it doesn’t take away from the joy of visiting. Home to tons of used books for sale, the refurbished gristmill still has the historic architecture and landscape that make it a worthwhile trip. A beautiful waterfall and a tasty little café known for its craft beers are a plus for this destination. They also host weekly concerts.
5. Yankee Candle
The Yankee Candle flagship store in South Deerfield blossoms with splendor as the winter gets cooler. The store is decorated with mums and pumpkins in early fall, with a full-blown Christmas theme once November rolls around. Yankee Candle is one of the biggest holiday attractions in the area, and includes a candle making museum and tiny village. This is a great place to do your Christmas shopping.
